Ethan Iverson
Ethan Iverson is a pianist, composer, and writer whose music draws on the rich tradition and continuous evolution of jazz. Born in Menomonie, Wisconsin, Iverson was musical director of the Mark Morris Dance Group, with whom he still collaborates, and a student of Fred Hersch and Sophia Rosoff. He came to prominence as the original pianist for avant-jazz trio The Bad Plus, whose recording of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring for Sony created waves in both the jazz and classical worlds, and has achieved cult status. He has also recorded for ECM and Sunnyside Records, and presently records for iconic and innovative jazz label Blue Note.
Iverson’s eclecticism and wit are reflected in an ambitious range of recent and ongoing projects, including collaborations with iconic drummers Billy Hart and Albert “Tootie” Heath, recordings with trumpeter Tom Harrell and saxophonist Mark Turner, and compositions for orchestra, big band, solo instruments with piano, and music for the Mark Morris Dance Group. His insightful and compelling critical commentary can be found on his Substack “Do the Math” as well as The Nation, JazzTimes , The New Yorker, and The New York Times.
Playfair Sonatas is his premiere recording for Urlicht AudioVisual.
