The third morning of the festival is marked by a solo violin recital in which Miranda Cookson—an internationally acclaimed violinist renowned for her exceptional technique and incisive interpretations spanning both contemporary and classical repertoires—reveals the expressive possibilities of the violin at its most essential: the unaccompanied form.
The program opens with Biber’s Passacaglia, followed by Bach’s solo sonata, presenting a sense of historical order and structural balance. Elliott Carter’s Four Lauds then fractures temporal perception itself, while Boulez’s Anthèmes I drives the music toward an extreme state of tension. The program concludes with Carlos Simon’s Between Worlds, which articulates a renewed sense of embodiment and rhythm in the present era.
Within the silent, resonant space of the Noh stage, these works are not presented as a chronological sequence, but as a process of musical emergence, disintegration, and regeneration. Through this progression, a continuous and immersive musical experience unfolds.
Johann Sebastian Bach: Sonata No. 1 for Solo Violin
Elliott Carter: Four Lauds
